SHOULD SCHOOLS BAN MOBILE DEVICES?
Wherever we go these days it is not uncommon to see groups of friends out together but rather than conversing with one another each is engaged with their phones.

Is this just the way it is, or should we be trying to retain the art of face-to-face conversation?

An Australian school principal, Meg Melville wants to find ways of facilitating the direct conversations she feels are so vital for young people's social development.

''Being fully present in the moment, listening and speaking to one another and actually engaging in the art of conversation is a social skill that we wish to instil.''

While some think mobile devices can play an important role in schools as a valuable learning tool and a safety measure, others consider that such devices can be isolating and detrimental to essential socialisation skills.

Meg Melville is proposing mobile devices are banned in school playgrounds so that students can actually communicate with those around them.

Should we be concerned about the potential damage of this 'disengagement' or should we be more concerned about Meg Melville's proposal?
