There has been a massive decrease in the orangutan population specifically because of something called palm oil. Palm oil is an edible plant oil derived from the mesocarp of the fruit of the oil palm. This is part of the orangutans habitat, and is causing major deforestation and the orangutans are slowly dying out because of this. They are losing all their homes and with less and less place to live, the orangutans have now become an endangered species. Further more, when orangutans are searching for new homes, they sometimes get caught in palm oil fields, where they are trespassing and the farmers are legally allowed to kill them to protect their crops. Nowadays, there are only about 50,000 orangutans left. That might seem like a lot, but that is a decrease of 80% in the last 100 years! Indonesia is also is the Guinness World Records book for the highest rate deforestation, and the demand for palm oil is still growing, and quite fast. Tropical ranforests and peatlands in in South East Asia are being torn up for oil palm plantations.
It is proposed that the government and whoever can helo should find a substitute for palm oil
