[REMEMBER: TO ADVISE JO WELL CHECK OUT THE CASE BOARD - ADD TO IT AND COMMENT TOO IF YOU LIKE]
My name is Jo Smith. I'm 18 and live in Sydney, Australia, and so far I've had a normal - and lucky - life. Later this year I'm going to Medical School, and I'm very excited.
Last month something very strange happened to me - I was approached by a group of companies to see if I wanted to go to Mars. Yep, you read it right. Do I want to emigrate to Mars?? Apparently I'm a perfect candidate - young, bright, independent, no current partner and wanting to stay that way .....
A first I didn't take it seriously, but it is very real. A Dutch company (together with several others, including big TV stations) aims to land humans on Mars by 2023 as the first step toward establishing a permanent colony on the Red Planet. The project, called Mars One, plans to drop four astronauts - including me! - on Mars in April 2023. New members will arrive every two years after that. To pay for all of this, Mars One says it will stage a media spectacle the likes of which the world has never seen — a sort of interplanetary reality show - "Big Brother Mars".
mars-one.com/en/ But here's the catch - none of us will ever return to Earth. If I go I will grow old on Mars and eventually die there.
But what a life. What an experience!
I want to go and I want to stay - and I also have concerns about being on a TV show at least some of the time. And it will cost $6 billion just to get the four of us there when 20,000 children a day die of poverty here.....
What should I do? Should I set an example and stay here??? Or should I set an example and go to Mars??
Please help me make the best decision.
