LIP SYNC STINK?
Brittany Spears has been in the headlines recently as it was found that she had forgotten to lip sync during a section of a recent performance thus revealing the reality of what a Brittany Spears 'live' show really is.

While some critics have been very scathing of this behaviour others see it as an acceptable practice. In fact some claim that the energetic dance performances by many pop stars means that it would be near impossible to also sing, especially to sustain singing over the length of a 90 minute show. time.com/8747/britney-spears-forgot-to-lip-sync-during-her-las-vegas-show-but-thats-okay/

Is it important for music stars to actually sing themselves?

Certainly when people talk of attending a concert, most will say they are going to 'see' a performer, rather going to 'listen'.

There is also an assumption that pop stars will sound like their recorded music. Those who are disappointed often claim it is because the performer did not sound like they usually do.

For many, Brittany's stage tactics come as no surprise, with several other musicians also suspected of lip syncing: www.forbes.com/sites/michelecatalano/2013/01/25/from-michael-jackson-to-beyonce-a-brief-history-o...

In what is a very competitive music industry it is likely that some performers who do lip sync will be very keen to keep the truth under wraps. There are high expectations that young musicians especially, will deliver an extravagant performance. There is undoubtedly pressure to keep up the appearance of being the ultimate all singing dancing superstar.

But what about the concert goer who has paid out significant amounts of money? Do they have the right to know if the performance includes live singing - certainly many will be expecting it to be live?

Is a concert more about stage presence than the sound?

Is Brittany therefore delivering what her fans really want or deceiving them?

It is proposed that musicians should have to declare whether their concert performances are live or lip synced
