Ebola is one of the largest problems our global scoiety faces today. The disease has infected over 14,000 people from mostly Guinea, Liberia & Sierra Leone. There have also been cases in the US, Spain, Nigeria & Mali, but all these countries have now been determined as free from the disease. Many countries are currently failing to aid these victims and try to find a cure. Some critics say that the disease is only contained to a small part of the world but in fact it could quickly spread if everyone were to step back and not do anything. Ebola is spread via bodily fluids, which is not exactly the most efficient means of spreading, which makes it slightly easier to contain. But thousands from these countries are being diagnosed with this currently uncurable disease every day. About two months ago, fatality rate was approximately 48%, but now it has jumped to a frightening 70%.
On October 15, a United Nations official warned that the world only has 45 days before the disease becomes out of control. Mr Banbury estimated that by December 1 it would have shot up to 10,000 deaths each week. He warns that funerals are the most common way of transmission as African funerary rituals often include touching the dead body. Thousands more than the current 50 approved funeral squads will be needed and they also need more than the about 5000 current treatment beds. 'It [Ebola] is running faster than us, and it is winning the race. We either stop Ebola now or we face an entirely unprecedented situation for which we do not have a plan' Mr Banbury warns us.
So the question is, should the world be putting more attention and effort into curing Ebola, or can we easily outrun the disease and contain it before all is lost?
