Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton was involved in one of Australia's most famous murder trials. She was accused and convicted of killing her 2-month old daughter, Azaria, while camping at Ayers Rock in 1980. She always claimed that a dingo took her baby from the family tent where Azaria slept with her brothers on the night she disappeared.
Lindy was found guilty of murder and convicted of life in prison. She spent three years in prison. Eight years later, her conviction was reversed after new evidence was found. Her husband Michael Chamberlain was also found not guilty of accomplice. In total there were four inquests into Azaria’s death.
In 1992 she received $1.3 million from the Australian government for wrongful imprisonment. As part of the agreement Lindy agreed not to pursue the government for any more money. However the cost to Lindy and Michael for all these inquests has added up to $5.5 million.
As the result of a fourth inquest on 2012, a final ruling was made on June 12th that a dingo dog took baby Azaria from the campsite in 1980 and caused her death. Lindy was 32 years old when her baby disappeared and she spent 32 years to prove that a dingo took her baby. Lindy spent so much of her time and money proving she never did anything wrong in the first place and now she can’t recover any of that because she said that she would not pursue the government for any money.
It is proposed that the government should pay Lindy back her costs considering that a Dingo took her baby.
